What is Knotwords?

Knotwords is a daily word puzzle from acclaimed designer Zach Gage and Jack Schlesinger, published by Noodlecake. It has been praised across the puzzle world for its elegance — it takes the satisfaction of a crossword and strips away the trivia, leaving something closer to a logic puzzle. There are no clues to look up and nothing to know in advance. Everything you need to solve the grid is already on the board.

Think of it as a cross between a crossword, an anagram, and Sudoku. You are handed clusters of letters and a grid, and your job is pure deduction: arrange the letters so that every word reads correctly. If you enjoy Wordle for the daily habit but want something meatier and more logical, Knotwords is the natural next step.

How to Play Knotwords

The grid is divided into small outlined sections, and each section comes with its own bundle of letters. Your task is to place those letters into that section so that every across and every down run in the whole grid spells a valid word.

The rules in four steps

Read the sections. Each outlined region shows the exact set of letters that must go inside it — no more, no fewer.
Place the letters. Arrange each section's letters within its own cells however you like.
Make every run a word. Every horizontal (across) and vertical (down) sequence of connected cells must form a valid English word.
Use the overlaps. Cells shared between an across word and a down word are your best clues — the letter there has to work in both directions at once.

There are no hints about which words appear — only which letters are available. Solving comes from testing arrangements and letting the across/down overlaps eliminate the impossible ones.

Daily Classic

The free, everyday puzzle. Every player gets one new Daily Classic each day — the standard Knotwords experience and the mode most people mean when they say "today's Knotwords."

Daily Twist

A Pro mode that adds a constraint: each row and column shows how many vowels it contains, with a cap on how many vowels can appear. It sounds like it makes things harder, but the vowel counts are also a powerful deduction tool — they narrow your options dramatically once you learn to read them.

Tricky Puzzles & the Archive

Pro players also unlock tougher themed puzzle sets and the full back-catalogue archive, so you can play past puzzles or ramp up the difficulty beyond the daily.

Strategy Tips

Start where letters are forced. Look for sections whose letters can only fit one sensible way — a section with just a couple of cells, or one containing an awkward letter, often has a single valid arrangement. Lock those in first.
Chase the rare letters. Q, J, X, and Z have very few valid neighbours. A Q almost always needs a U beside it (unless it's a rare Q-without-U word), and that constraint frequently reveals the whole section.
Solve the intersections. A cell shared by an across word and a down word must satisfy both. When you're stuck, ask "what single letter could legally sit here in both directions?" — the answer is usually only one option.
Lean on common endings. Runs of three or four cells often resolve into familiar endings like -ED, -ER, -ING, or -LY. Testing those patterns quickly confirms or rules out an arrangement.
Count your vowels (especially in Daily Twist). Every valid word needs vowels in workable spots. Tracking where your A, E, I, O, U can go — and, in Twist, how many are allowed per line — is often faster than guessing whole words.
Work outward from a solved corner. Once one section is certain, its confirmed letters become fixed clues for the neighbouring sections. Momentum builds as the grid tightens.
